Up North Placemats

I saw this fabric in my mom's basement... AKA I went "shopping" in her basement, and fell in love with this Minnesota-y fabric.  The front is birch trees, the backside is pinecones/branches.  Say hello to my new placemats! (I made 4 total - and more if I can find more of this stuff)

I made the birch fabric the main/front side fabric, and the pinecone the backside.  I put a layer of quilt batting in between the two fabrics and quilted the 3 layers together.  For each project I do, I like to theme the quilting design to match the fabric.  For instance, since I used the birch trees, I quilted a simple design that gave the effect of trees in the woods.  Instead of stright lines, I gave the fabric a wiggle every so often to make a slight zig-zag.  I spaced the lines about 1" apart.

Then, finally, I attached the binding.  LOVE the color contrast.

Can't wait to use these at a dinner party, and I won't even be afraid if someone spills on them... They are made to be used, and to be washable ;)
